Danube Agrarian: “We grow everything!”

Danube Agrarian: “We grow everything!”
The company is developing very quickly. What is the secret?
−We have very tasty products. It is because we are on the legendary wine 45th parallel, and there, as you have probably heard, the most delicious vegetables, fruits, and grapes are growing - Roman Dyazhuk, the head of "Danube Agrarian" says. - We have a climate here, almost like in Bordeaux. Nature does everything itself! In fact, of course, not everything is so simple. In less than 10 years, he managed to turn the former collective farm into a farm, the products of which are presented in all major retail chains, exported to the EU, USA and Canada.
The company is constantly searching for new directions. It has already grown the fruits, vegetables, medical herbals, seeds (in particular organic corn seeds), chickens, broiler ducks, sheep, and producing eggs…and having also a lot of plans.

–It seems to me that there is no other company in the world that has as many organic areas as ours: crop production, vegetables and fruits, animal husbandry, medicinal herbs, processing and much more, - Roman says proudly.

In the agricultural sector, he found himself almost by accident. He used to have a logistics business, work in the food industry and also do a lot of different stuff, but he had no agricultural experience. In 2011 he bought a former collective farm in the Izmail district. The farm itself was certified for organic production. –I decided to continue this process. I intuitively felt that organic production is right thing. The more I work, the more I see prospects in organic, - Roman says about this decision. And he adds that he loved this business so much that it became his main one.
The farm is located in the South of Ukraine, in Odessa region, Izmail district, Safyany village. It is interesting that Roman Dyazhuk was born nearby, in Izmail, at the age of 16 he left this place and did not think that he would ever live here again. But 20 years later he returned to his small homeland to manage. In three years, "Danube Agrarian" under his leadership has become a well-known brand.

The businessman says that after buying a new business, he had to sit down for textbooks. After his first education he was a heat engineer, at that time he already had a business education, and here he needed knowledge of agronomy. He entered the Agricultural Academy for a specialization as an agronomist. But agricultural techniques in organic farming are significantly different from the usual, and sell organic products in a completely different way. That's why I had to learn a lot abroad. I watched how the best farms work. I learned all the intricacies of my business: from agro-technologies to brand positioning.

Initially, they were mainly engaged in the export of grain and industrial crops (wheat, rapeseed, sunflower, barley, etc.). Gradually began to produce more and more finished products and bring it to the internal market. Today, the products of "Danube Agrarian" can be seen in most retail chains: Goodwine, WineTime, Silpo, Novus, Ashan, Velyka Kyshenya, MegaMarket, etc .; regional retail chains, in specialized stores of healthy food. Finished products are also supplied to many countries around the world: Switzerland, Germany, Romania, Poland, USA, Canada.

–In assortment more than 50 items of production, thus only melons almost 50 various grades, - Roman Dyazhuk tells. - We have a lot of products that none of the organics grow anymore. That is, many unique products with a wide range. The plan is to provide the entire food basket with our organic products.

There are opportunities for such plans.

The land bank of “Danube Agrarian” is now 2,200 hectares - the company is one of the largest in Ukraine. For comparison - in Europe, organic farms have an average land area - 150-200 hectares.
Much of the farm's land is under irrigation. Lots of sun and water - is a great competitive advantage. Organic farming requires a lot of manual labor, but the inhabitants of the surrounding villages are happy to go to work, instead of going abroad to earn money. The farm is a fairly large employer - 150-200 people work here during the season, and they all receive decent salaries.

Of course, as with any business, organic farming has many specific risks.

–First, you need to find those crops that you can really grow in your environment. Secondly, technologies are needed. And, thirdly, you need marketing - because without it you will not sell what you produce, - Roman says. - In general, the path of organic production is very long and difficult. Such products require more time, higher risks, higher costs and should be sold completely differently.

"Danube Agrarian" is one of the largest manufacturer of organic eggs. They keep three thousand laying hens.
All on free range, eat only organic feed (grown on the same farm). "Resort" conditions have been created for birds: a modern chicken coop, several walking areas with green grass, the opportunity to "take dust baths" - these are the conditions for birds that provide organic standards. Disease-resistant, specially bred breeds of chickens are chosen, because birds can not be given any drugs, in contrast to industrial poultry, where they live in extreme crowds and that they do not get sick, receive large doses of antibiotics.

The farm produces not only eggs, but also chicken and duck meat, and has a modern shop for processing and packaging meat.

The orchard was laid from scratch, nectarines and peaches grow here. These are the crops that are very affected by pests, and therefore in conventional agriculture they are most intensively treated with chemicals. Nectarines and peaches are traditionally included in the rating of "Dirty Ten", a list of vegetables, fruits and greens with the highest content of residual pesticides. Therefore, by the way, you can consume only organic stones without harm to health

–Peaches and nectarines are difficult to grow without chemicals, so organic producers avoid them, and we managed to "make friends" and in this niche we have no competitors at all, - the head of the farm explains.

The farm is also the only one to grow organic batata - a useful product that is greatly-demanded abroad, but is still little known in Ukraine, so it has to be actively promoted.

It seems that the "Danube Agrarian" really grows everything: wheat of different varieties, millet, lentils, corn, canola, barley, peas, chickpeas, mustard, sunflower, potatoes, onions, beets, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, batata, melons…medical plants, watermelons and even cubic ones, which have already become a symbol of the farm. Probably most publications in the country wrote about them.

–I can't say that I was counting on such a stir, but I admit that we are really trying to come up with something interesting and original. Cubic watermelons are grown in Japan. I wanted to try too. We have the first cubic organic watermelons. And now our farm is associated with them. It's like our logo.

“Danube Agrarian” products are not processed for long-term storage. After collection, it is sent to the refrigerator in compliance with the optimal temperature, and then transported to Kiev and other cities in refrigerators.

Fruit chips were made from watermelons, melons and plums. They can be found in retail chains under the DUNA CHIPS brand.
This is a useful, tasty and very unusual product. They do not contain sugar or preservatives, and they are made by sublimation. Fresh berries, fruits or vegetables, when they are most useful, are frozen at a temperature of minus 40 ° C. And then moderately heat the frozen products in vacuum. Ice crystals do not turn into a liquid, but immediately into water vapor, preserving the cellular structure and maximum benefit.
Now the company plans to focus on marketing and promoting its products. Organic foods are still something unusual for most Ukrainians, although they should be the basis of the diet.
–We constantly have to conduct educational work. For retailers to take an organic product, they must understand how it differs from the usual. The client also does not always understand its value, - Roman says. - Organics are not just products grown without pesticides. It is about health, and about the environment, and about social responsibility, and about the attitude to the land, and about the future. This is a different approach to life, and we have a similar one with our customers.
The market has to communicate not only the ideological component, but also the pricing. For example, in poultry farms chickens gain marketable weight in 40-45 days, organic free-range birds that feed on organic grain reach the desired size in just 90 days.
But the nutritional value of such products is much higher. The consumer does not always understand why organic products are more expensive and often think that they are trying to sell him a push-button phone for the price of an iPhone. Many people have a stereotype that this is primitive farming according to the old methods, although in reality it is a serious scientific approach and modern processing technologies. And the price is not really that high. The difference between a dozen regular eggs and those labeled "organic" is the cost of a cup of coffee. Give up one coffee a week, instead you will get a lot of vitamins, trace elements, because the nutritional value of natural products is much higher.
–Organic production is a completely different philosophy, a different approach to life, to the land, to consumers, - Roman Dyazhuk is convinced. - We have a difficult path, but a very important mission, because we care about people's health, about the environment. It is gratifying that there are more and more fans of our products.
