Ukrainian winemaking is rich with ancient recipes, enthralling traditions and tasting basements at times of Petr. 

BrandStory has prepared the review of wine producers who appeared and grew at different time in different regions, work with different volumes. However, they have similar characteristics – the unique legend, historical roots and Ukrainian genealogy.

 Winery Chizay

Winemaking company Chateau Chizay is founded in 1995 in the town Berehovo (Zakarpattia region). The company is engaging in growing the grapes, its processing and producing the wine. The company has two plants – primary winemaking in the village of Orosievo and secondary one in the town of Berehovo. In 2006 the company laid the vineyards in Zakarpattia region (on three micro terroirs) of 272 ha common square. The volume of production is 1.6 million bottles in a year. 150 oak barrels from French, American and Hungarian oak are used for aging the wine. Gennadiy Josiphovich Gutman is the founder of winemaking complex. His granddad imbedded the love to the wine and tremulous treat to the ground. Pink Traminer, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Furmint, Rhine and Italian Riesling, and other European and local sorts, including unique for Ukraine Cserszegi (autochthonous sort of Hungarian origin) are grown on the Chateau Chizay vineyards. The company produces wines only from own harvest. In 2020, despite of world crisis because of pandemic, winery launched two new products – strong vine drink Grape White Blend and sparkling wine Carpathian Sekt, and also built new cellar for premium aging wines.

Chateau Chizay exports wines in the USA, Israel, Great Britain, Canada, Lithuania, Nigeria, Hungarian, Denmark, Japan and others, and, of course, delivers to all regions of Ukraine. “To make just qualified wines is interesting, but we want more. We create new history of Zakarpattia and Europe winemaking, and today Chateau Chizay – is not wine plant, but winemaking town, the center of noble craft and man-made wonder of Zakarpattia” – is declared at the winery. There are in plans for 2022 development of the line of aging wines, launching one as a minimum brand new product and opening the production of vine ethanol and based on it drinks. And, also – the development of direction of wine tourism. In 2021 the company Chateau Chizay has already launched some original tours, for example, Yoga on the vineyards. In the future they plan to continue creating original tour products. The company develops educational project Chateau Chizay Academy, opened the Museum of winemaker of Chizay and plans to build the hotel on the vineyards – for 40-45 rooms.

Odessa Kolonist

Family winery Kolonist was founded in 2005 in Danubian Basarabia at the South of Odessa region, one of the best Ukrainian winemaking regions. Its founder is Ivan Plachkov, the former Minister of fuel and energy of Ukraine. Winery pays attention on high quality dry wines, also produces sparkling, medium-dry and sweet wines. The founders like to mention the fact that they are situated on the one latitude with famous region Bordo. Kolonist produces about 280 000 bottles a year that allows pay more attention to the quality of the wine and implement the brand new technology and innovations. In 2019 the company started to export wines in Canada and China.

Kolonist creates the brand of Ukrainian wine, making two wines from grapes of Ukrainian sorts: Sukholimanskiy White and Odessa Black.

“Today the wine Kolonist became the visit card of diplomatic body of Ukraine, and enjoys Ukrainian diaspora and even descendants of German Kolonists from Bessarabia in far Canada”, - the founders of the brand claim. Tastings and excursions on the vineyards, winemaking workshops and wine basements are organized in the winery.

Winery Beykush

Small winery Beykush actually created in 2010. Exactly at that time, young and curious IT-specialist Yevgeniy Shneyderis decided to make an experiment and check the hypothesis in Ukrainian realities – can it be possible to build the production by European wine Chateau model and herewith “produce” high quality wine with small lots. The idea was successful: in one year the owner spread the landed estates and in 2014 got his first harvest from own fields, since that time he has worked only with own material. Beykush vineyard is small – 11 ha, the wine is made by classic recipes, with the help of hand labor. Suitable for our climate international sorts of grapes and sorts of Circum-Pontic area from Georgia and Ukraine are basically grown. They are white sorts – Chardonnay, Pinnot Gris, Riesling, Sauvingnon Blanc, Rkatsiteli and red – Pinot Noir, Merlot, Saperavi, Cabernet Sauvingnon. In addition, there are experimental plants of other sorts. “We experiment, trying to release interesting wine, not massive, but unique one with known handwriting”, - the owner specifies. Excursions and tasty tastings are made and organized in the winery.

Winery Grande Vallee

Vineyards Grande Vallée are planted in 1999 and 2000, in the center of unique part of the South Ukraine. Nowadays, their common square is more than 650 hectares. Certified plants of direct clones of vine sorts of French and German selection from producers were used for vineyards planting: Hyacinthe Raymond (France) и Reben Sibbus (Germany). The grapes are carefully harvested by hand in keeping with the best traditions and delivered for processing to the modern wine-making complex Vintrest. The company produces varietal and champagne wines of its own brand. The winery was closed for a long time, excursions to the Vintrest plant appeared quite recently.

Winery of Prince P.N. Trubetskoy

История винодельни насчитывает более 120 лет – это чуть ли ни единственное историческое шато Украины. Первые виноградники были заложены в 1896 году, Князя Трубецкого начать производство вина убедил его друг Лев Голицын, который и выбрал месторасположение и первые сорта винограда. The history of the winery is more than 120 years old - this is almost the only historical chateau in Ukraine. The first vineyards were founded in 1896, Prince Trubetskoy was persuaded to start wine production by his friend Lev Golitsyn, who chose the location and the first grape varieties. Today Trubetskogo vineyards are located on an area of 200 hectares in the Kherson region on the slopes of the Dnieper. The main varietal composition of the vineyards remained practically unchanged: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Aligote. All seedlings were brought from Italy and France. But the assortment of wines has been significantly replenished with a line of young wines, blended red wine KT red, as well as sparkling wine made according to the classic method of champagne. House of vintage cognacs Tavria

The House of Vintage Cognacs Tavria is one of the oldest cognac enterprises in Eastern Europe. The first vineyards were planted in 1889 by hereditary winemakers Jean Jaton, Louis Hechler and Julius Mayer. The vineyard is on the same parallel with the famous French city that gave the name to the noble drink of the same name: the Ukrainian city of New Kakhovka is located on the same 46th parallel as the famous French Cognac. Today it is one of the largest cognac producers with vineyards of 1400 hectares of varietal vineyards. The House of Vintage Cognacs Tavria provides at least a third of the premium cognac market within the country and is the leading exporter of branded cognacs in Ukraine. Vintage cognacs Tavria Classic, Oriana, collection cognacs Askania, Dnipro, Kherson, wines Askania Cabernet, Legend of Tavria, Emerald - not a complete list of elite drinks produced at the plant. A distinctive feature of the enterprise is its own production of electricity, which covers the needs of the plant. “A modern factory does not have to stand still. Therefore, we are introducing innovations that affect most aspects of the work process,” the plant sums up.

Winery Shabo

Winery Shabo is located on the territory of one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Europe. The company was founded in 2003 by the famous Ukrainian entrepreneurs of Georgian origin - Vazha Iukuridze. Today the company's vineyards have expanded to 1200 hectares. The land is based on both old seedlings, which were restored, as well as new ones brought from Italy and France. There are 20 traditional European varieties planted in the terroir, as well as Saperavi and Rkatsiteli varieties. The unique local variety Telti-Kuruk also grows here, which appeared on these lands during the time of the Ottoman Turks. Shabo has the largest (about 40 hectares) and the most ancient plantations. This is truly a visiting card not only of the company, but also of the country. It is from this variety that the first and only wine in Ukraine with the status of Controlled Appellations of Origin (analogue of the French Appellation d'Origine Controlee) was made. Since 2005, the Shabo company has been producing cognacs and brandy, and since 2013 - Shabo grape vodka. House of Sparkling Wines Shabo is one of the most important components of the overall concept of the company. It takes from 9 months to 3 years to produce sparkling wines using the classic technology of champagnization in a bottle.

Винохранилище SHABO – одно из крупнейших в Украине, его общая площадь около 10 тыс.кв.м. и имеет 3 уровня: нулевой, 5 метров и 9 метров под землей. Здесь хранится более 10 млн. литров вина. Всего в компании SHABO более 2000 дубовых французских баррик.

В 2009 году был открыт Центр культуры вина SHABO, идея которого принадлежит основателям компании.

Winery Koblevo

The creation of the Koblevo winery dates back to 1982, when the first production was built. However, the first seedlings, just over 1000 hectares of vineyards, were planted a little earlier - at the end of the 80s. Koblevsky grapes are grown on the 46th parallel, at the same latitude grapes are grown to create the French Beaujolais. 3333 bushes per hectare grow in the vineyards, according to European traditions, more than 100 types of wine from 16 varieties are produced. Experienced winemakers, using the latest European technologies, create exquisite Koblevo wines, refined Bon Vin, and unique Marengo vermouths here. As well as sparkling drinks and cognac. In addition, all products are divided into collections, including limited editions. Koblevo offers more than 30 wines (including Koblevo Rose Wine, Aligote, Baccarat, Isabella, Esmeralda, Riesling, Venice, etc.). One of the most popular wines is Cahors.

Winery Leanka

On the territory there are wine cellars, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. They were built in 1557. Tasting and sightseeing tours are offered. The Leanka company was established on the basis of the Serednyansky plant (1946), which in Soviet times was famous for such vintage wines as Serednyanskoe, Perlina Karpat, Troyanda Zakarpattya. Today dry, dessert and vintage dry wines are produced here: Isabella, Table white, Table rose, dessert Isabella, Irshavskoye, Spokusnitsya, vintage dry Serednyanske. Leanka is a grape variety, translated from Hungarian means "girl" and is one of the most popular varieties of this region. On the territory there are wine cellars, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. They were laid by captive Turks back in 1557 as underground shelters. Due to the favorable temperature conditions, the cellars began to be used as wine cellars.

Naturally, the winery offers tasting and sightseeing tours.

Don Alejandro Winery

The winery was founded in 2005. The owner of the author's winery Don Alejandro Winery is Alexander Vladimirovich Shapovalov. Architect by profession, but a sixth generation winemaker. The vineyards are located on the banks of the warm Khadzhibey estuary, the planting area is 14 hectares. The planting density of vines reaches 2,600 bushes per hectare. Assortment - over 30 items. The most vintage is Rkatsiteli 2013. There are also petnats from Pinot Noir, Odessa Black, Centaur, Firstborn Magarach, Aligote, Muscat Golodrigi.

Production volume: 167 thousand liters per year. Spillage - from 20 to 40 thousand bottles.

The wine is aged in oak barrels of Portuguese oak.

The character of the owner is directly reflected in the design - the winery is more reminiscent of an art object or an artist's house, therefore excursions and tastings at this winery are more than popular, especially if the owner is present.
